The pump shell of vertical long-axis pump is filled with the transported liquid. When the liquid flows from the center of the impeller to the outer edge, a certain vacuum is formed in the center of the impeller. Because the pressure above the liquid surface of the tank is greater than that at the inlet of the pump, the liquid is continuously pressed into the impeller. It can be seen that as long as the impeller keeps rotating, the liquid will be continuously absorbed and discharged.


When there is air in the pump housing, the centrifugal force is smaller because the density of air is much smaller than that of liquid. Therefore, the pressure difference between the upper surface of the tank and the suction port of the pump is not enough to pressure the liquid in the tank into the pump, that is, the pump has no self-priming ability, so that the pump can not deliver liquid. In order to fill the pump with liquid, a bottom valve with a filter net is usually installed at the bottom of the suction pipe. The bottom valve is a check valve, and the function of the filter net is to prevent solid material from entering. Damage to impeller or impediment to normal operation of pump.
